Don Julio aged 18 months: rich, sweet and a great sipping tequila for less than 1942.

We stock Don Julio Añejo because it's the clever buy: much of the 1942 richness at less than half the price. Caramel, honey and oak, smooth enough for anyone. It's a great choice for an Old Fashioned, and it's lovely with dessert.

Tastes like: caramel, wild honey, butterscotch and oak.

How to drink it:

  • Neat: pour 35ml of Don Julio Añejo into a tumbler, let it sit for a minute, then add a drop of water if you like
  • With a single ice cube
  • Old Fashioned: 50ml Don Julio Añejo, a teaspoon of sugar syrup and two dashes of Angostura bitters, stirred over ice with a twist of orange

For the agave nerds
  • Made by: La Primavera distillery, founded by Don Julio González in 1942 in the highlands of Jalisco.
  • Agave: 100% Blue Weber agave, harvested at 5 to 7 years old.
  • Cooking and extraction: Piñas steamed in traditional masonry ovens for about 48 hours, then milled to release the sweet juice.
  • Fermentation: A house yeast strain, for about 26 hours.
  • Still: Double distilled in stainless steel pot stills with copper.
  • Ageing: At least 18 months in ex-bourbon American white oak casks.

Why it tastes like this: Steaming the agave slowly in masonry ovens keeps it sweet and clean. The longer a bottle sits in ex-bourbon oak, the more vanilla, caramel and toasted wood it picks up.
