Guatemala's best-known sipping rum. Rich, smooth and aged high in the mountains.

We stock Zacapa 23 because it's the bottle people ask for by name when they want a proper sipping rum. It's sweet, round and very easy to like, which makes it one of the safest gifts on the shelf. If you've been bought one as a present before, you'll know why it's on so many wish lists. It also pairs beautifully with dessert.

Tastes like: honey, butterscotch, raisins, cocoa and spiced oak.

How to drink it:

  • Neat: pour 35ml of Zacapa 23 into a tumbler, let it sit for a minute, then add a drop of water if you like
  • On the rocks: 50ml Zacapa 23 over one large ice cube with a twist of orange peel
  • Old Fashioned: 50ml Zacapa 23, a teaspoon of sugar syrup and two dashes of Angostura bitters, stirred over ice with a twist of orange

For the rum nerds
  • Made by: Ron Zacapa, Guatemala.
  • Ageing: Aged 7,545ft (about 2,300m) above sea level, to develop slowly, using the Sistema Solera, where older and younger rums are blended as they age.
  • People: Master Blender Lorena Vásquez, one of the few female master blenders in spirits, with more than 35 years in the job.
  • This blend: Rums aged between 6 and 23 years, in barrels that previously held American whiskey, sherry and Pedro Ximénez wine.
  • Bottle: Each bottle has a petate band, handwoven by a Guatemalan weaver.

Why it tastes like this: The sherry and Pedro Ximénez casks are where the raisin, toffee and dried fruit come from. Ageing up high slows everything down, so it stays rich without getting woody.
