Eight-year-old Demerara rum: rich, smooth and happy neat or mixed.

We stock the 8 because it's the turning point in the El Dorado range: still great with cola, but good enough to sip on ice. Lovely toffee and dried fruit. It's a good-value bottle for anyone ready to start sipping rum.

Tastes like: toffee, raisin, vanilla and gentle spice.

How to drink it:

  • On the rocks: 50ml El Dorado 8 over one large ice cube with a twist of orange peel
  • With cola: 50ml El Dorado 8 over ice, topped with cola and a squeeze of lime
  • Old Fashioned: 50ml El Dorado 8, a teaspoon of sugar syrup and two dashes of Angostura bitters, stirred over ice with a twist of orange

For the rum nerds
  • Made by: Demerara Distillers Ltd, Plantation Diamond, East Bank Demerara, Guyana.
  • Made from: Molasses.
  • Fermentation: Up to 26 hours, giving a wash of about 7% ABV.
  • Still: The original wooden heritage stills are still in use, alongside newer stills.
  • Age: At least 8 years in oak barrels, in the Demerara climate.
  • Blending: A blend of rums from different stills, put together by the Master Blenders once aged.

Why it tastes like this: Wooden stills are rare anywhere in the world, and they give Guyana's rum its heavy, rich character. The older bottles lean on the pot stills, which is where the dark, earthy depth comes from.
