The original cocktail bitters, with the yellow cap and the oversized label.
Every bar has a bottle of Angostura, and a few dashes make a real difference. It adds depth to an old fashioned or a Manhattan, and a dash on top of a rum punch is a Caribbean tradition. One bottle lasts a long time.
Tastes like: concentrated, aromatic spice. Use it by the dash, not the measure.
How to drink it:
- Rum old fashioned: 50ml aged rum, 5–10ml sugar syrup, 2–3 dashes Angostura, stirred over ice
- Rum punch: a few dashes on top
- Pink gin: 2–3 dashes swirled round the glass, then 50ml gin and ice

The details
Dr Johann G.B. Siegert created the recipe in 1824 and named it after the town of Angostura (now Ciudad BolÃvar) in Venezuela. The House of Angostura is based in Trinidad and Tobago, and the recipe is still secret. It's used in the Old Fashioned, Manhattan, Pink Gin and Mai Tai.
