Smooth, sweet Demerara rum from Guyana. A great everyday mixer.

We stock the El Dorado 5 because it's the easy way into Guyanese rum: smooth, caramel-rich and great with cola or ginger. If you like it, the 8, 12 and 15 are waiting. It's a great price for a five-year-old rum, and it's lovely in a winter punch.

Tastes like: caramel, brown sugar, vanilla and soft tropical fruit.

How to drink it:

  • With cola: 50ml El Dorado 5 over ice, topped with cola and a squeeze of lime
  • Long and easy: 50ml El Dorado 5 over ice, topped with ginger beer and a wedge of lime
  • Rum punch: 50ml El Dorado 5, 100ml pineapple juice, 25ml lime juice, a dash of grenadine and a pinch of grated nutmeg, over plenty of ice

If you like this, try: El Dorado 8 Year Old Rum, 70cl (a little older) · El Dorado 12 Year Old Rum, 70cl (the sipping one)

For the rum nerds
  • Made by: Demerara Distillers Ltd, Plantation Diamond, East Bank Demerara, Guyana.
  • Made from: Molasses.
  • Fermentation: Up to 26 hours, giving a wash of about 7% ABV.
  • Still: The original wooden heritage stills are still in use, alongside newer stills.
  • Age: At least 5 years in oak barrels, in the Demerara climate.
  • Blending: A blend of rums from different stills, put together by the Master Blenders once aged.

Why it tastes like this: Wooden stills are rare anywhere in the world, and they give Guyana's rum its heavy, rich character. The older bottles lean on the pot stills, which is where the dark, earthy depth comes from.
