Rich, smooth 12-year-old Demerara rum. One of the best-value sippers in the shop.

We stock the 12 because it's what we pour when someone says 'I want to try a good rum neat'. Sweet, rich and full of dark fruit, it's a crowd-pleaser and a brilliant gift. If someone tells you they don't like rum neat, pour them a little of this.

Tastes like: dark toffee, raisin, cocoa, vanilla and oak.

How to drink it:

  • Neat: pour 35ml of El Dorado 12 into a tumbler, let it sit for a minute, then add a drop of water if you like
  • On the rocks: 50ml El Dorado 12 over one large ice cube with a twist of orange peel
  • With a square of dark chocolate after dinner

For the rum nerds
  • Made by: Demerara Distillers Ltd, Plantation Diamond, East Bank Demerara, Guyana.
  • Made from: Molasses.
  • Fermentation: Up to 26 hours, giving a wash of about 7% ABV.
  • Still: The original wooden heritage stills are still in use, alongside newer stills.
  • Age: 12 years in oak barrels, in the Demerara climate.
  • The stills in this blend: The EHP Wooden Coffey still and the Metal Coffey still, which El Dorado credits for its "estery richness".
  • Blending: A blend of rums from different stills, put together by the Master Blenders once aged.

Why it tastes like this: Wooden stills are rare anywhere in the world, and they give Guyana's rum its heavy, rich character. The older bottles lean on the pot stills, which is where the dark, earthy depth comes from.
