The mezcal bartenders reach for first. Smoky, fruity and made the traditional way in Oaxaca.

We stock Vida because it's the best introduction to real mezcal. It's smoky but not overpowering, and it's made in one village by one family. Swap it for tequila in a margarita and you'll get the point of mezcal straight away. If you've only ever had tequila shots, this is the bottle that will change your mind about agave.

Tastes like: sweet roasted agave, gentle wood smoke, ginger and tropical fruit.

How to drink it:

  • Mezcal margarita: 50ml Del Maguey Vida, 25ml fresh lime juice and 15ml agave syrup, shaken with ice, with a chilli-salt rim
  • Mezcal and tonic: 50ml Vida over ice, topped with tonic and a slice of orange
  • Neat, sipped slowly, with orange slices dusted with chilli salt

If you like this, try: QuiQuiRiQui Matatlán Mezcal, 70cl (another Espadín, a bit bolder) · Casamigos Joven Mezcal, 70cl (a softer, smoother mezcal)

For the agave nerds
  • Made by: Del Maguey Single Village Mezcal, founded by Ron Cooper in 1995. Made in the village of San Luis del Río, Oaxaca, by palenquero Paciano Cruz Nolasco.
  • Agave: Espadín.
  • Fermentation: Natural fermentation.
  • Still: Distilled twice in wood-fired copper stills.
  • Bottling: 42% ABV.

Why it tastes like this: One village, one palenquero, a natural fermentation and a wood fire under the still. That's where the smoke and tropical fruit come from.
