Christmas Rum Cocktails: 7 Festive Recipes to Make at Home
Christmas Rum Cocktails
The best Christmas rum cocktails mix rum with warm spice, citrus and something creamy or fruity. Here are seven festive recipes to make at home, from Jamaican sorrel and Guinness punch to coquito, a spiced rum hot toddy and hot buttered rum.
Why Rum Works So Well at Christmas
Across the Caribbean, Christmas has always had rum in the glass.
In Jamaica it's sorrel, steeped with ginger and spice. In Trinidad and Tobago it's ponche de crème; in Puerto Rico, coquito. Each one pairs rum with the flavours of the season: nutmeg, cinnamon, citrus peel, vanilla and something rich and creamy.
Every recipe below uses a measured 25 ml of rum per drink. Measuring keeps the drink balanced, and it makes it easy to batch up for a crowd.

Christmas Rum Cocktail Questions
What is the best rum for Christmas cocktails?
It depends on the drink. Jamaican white overproof such as Wray & Nephew is traditional with sorrel and rum punch, a smooth golden rum suits creamy drinks like Guinness punch and ponche de crème, white rum goes in coquito, and spiced or aged rum works best in hot drinks.
Can I make sorrel ahead of Christmas?
Yes. Sorrel needs to steep overnight anyway. Once strained and sweetened, keep it in the fridge and add the rum to each glass when you serve.
Does Guinness punch have rum in it?
The base is Guinness Foreign Extra Stout with condensed milk and spice. Many families add a splash of rum at Christmas, but it's optional.
What is the difference between coquito and ponche de crème?
Both are creamy Caribbean Christmas drinks made with rum. Coquito, from Puerto Rico, is coconut-based and has no eggs. Ponche de crème, from Trinidad and Tobago, is made with eggs, milk, lime zest, nutmeg and bitters.
How much rum should I use per drink?
We use a measured 25 ml per drink throughout this guide. Use a measure rather than free-pouring, especially with batched drinks.
